2A Match Report

7th November vs ECB at Bay City Park

After a second miracle in two weeks with ACSSC Captain Larry Stephens winning the toss again the ACSSC team took to the field two short initially with Gareth Arnold and Mark Needham struggling to work out the big and the little hand on their watches.

The game couldn't have started out worse with ECB 25/0 after 3 overs and two of the ACSSC bowlers (captain Larry Stephens and Gareth Arnold) injured and unable to bowl for the remainder of the game. At 96/2 at drinks things looked ominous but this turned around after the break with a flurry of wickets leaving ECB struggling at 154/7 after 32 overs.

The sure hands of Andy Arnold grasping three catches and some athletic saves from the rest of the team (including presidents captain Simon Coleman) backing up some accurate bowling. For the second week in a row though the ACSSC team were unable to finish the lower order off and ECB finished with 229/8 from their 40 overs.

The problems continued during the lunch break with the bbq running out of gas while cooking the rather dubious quality sausages provided by Rob 'Sausage Lover' Sadler. While ACSSC captain Larry Stephens and Rod Turner were driving around the shore trying to find a place that would fill the bbq bottle a makeshift batting order was thrown together. Eight gas stations later and finally a full gas bottle Larry Stephens and Rod Turner returned to find the ACSSC side 22/3 after 7 overs.

Cam McKenzie (batting in place of the injured Gareth Arnold) and Mike Clegg set about steadying the innings seeing the team through to 87/4 at drinks. After finally getting the bbq lunch eaten the ACSSC team then set about chasing down the ECB total, Rod Turner and Lee Gornall leading the charge.

When Rod Turner was out for a well compiled 53, 31 further runs were required from 3 overs. 16 runs were needed from the final over with Lee Gornall and Rob Sadler at the crease, a wide, a boundary and some quick running left Lee Gornall needing a six from the last ball. Alas his well hit drive was along the ground directly at a boundary fielder, one run the result and a win to ECB by 4 runs. The ACSSC chase finishing at 225/8.
